Chapter Nineteen

Chapter Nineteen is done, it was a bit of a tricky chapter. It is the first time I have written extensively in the point-of-view of this particular character. It is tough to flesh out a character that I know readers will largely be viewing as a jerk going into the chapter. Well, on the Chapter Twenty, this one should be real good!

I've been back at this for a little while now, just now remembering to update this blog. Glad to be back to work on the story! By the way, Chapter 18 is completed!

Stalled

Hey everyone, just thought I would drop by to let you all know that my progress has pretty much halted for the moment. I've been dealing with some personal issues for the past week or two that I am trying to resolve and I hope to get through them soon and get back to the story, things have just been too stressful for me to focus properly.

I finally finished Chapter Seventeen just now, this one gave me a lot of trouble. It's not that long, but for some reason I just had such a hard time writing it. I have also finally decided on a title, which I will be posting sometime this weekend!

Chapter Sixteen

Just finished Chapter Sixteen a few minutes ago, it was a really tough one for me to write for some reason. It features a disagreement and fight between our heroes.

Well I finished a very very important chapter much quicker then I thought I would, probably due to the fact that it had been brewing inside me pretty much since I finished the outline. Thought I'd post another update on the overall progress as well.

Chapter Fourteen

Well I just finished Chapter Fourteen and now I have reached a point that I have really been looking forward to. Chapter Fifteen is one of the most important chapters in the entire story, I am both excited and daunted by the task ahead of me. It will be a largely dialogue-driven chapter but it will reveal a lot about the story and set the tone for the rest of the book.

Ah sweet sweet vacation time! I finished Chapter Thirteen today and am well into Chapter Fourteen so without further ado, I will get back to work!

Chapter Twelve has been finished. I'm not sure how much I will get done for the rest of this week due to a hectic work schedule but my vacation next week should make up for that!

Chapter Eleven has been completed, another chapter from the villain's point of view, fun to write about the other side of the conflict.

Chapter Ten and Overall Progress

Well I knocked off Chapter Ten in short order which put me roughly 1/4 of the way through my first draft. Well, not quite, since the later chapters are likely to be significantly longer, but still, I'm pretty happy with it. Here's a little list of my current chapters and their word counts.

Chapter One: 2,638 words
Chapter Two: 1,231 words
Chapter Three: 1,346 words
Chapter Four: 1,637 words
Chapter Five: 2,121 words
Chapter Six: 1,955 words
Chapter Seven: 1,982 words
Chapter Eight: 2,119 words
Chapter Nine: 1,820 words

Total Word Count: 18,857
It's 69 pages in Microsoft Word, which means little, if it were to get published the page count would be very different based on the size of the pages and font. If I had to take a guess, I'd say it will end up around 80-85,000 words total. Looking back, Chapters Two and Three will both be longer after I go through and edit. Now back to writing and figuring out a title!

First off, I don't have the title yet, still working on it. On a positive note, I finished chapter eight. Really excited to get into chapter nine, things speed up even more from here on out so I'm gonna get back to it.

Finished up Chapter Six today, fun one to write, another new character's point of view. Really starting to get into the main meat and potatoes of the story now.

Just realized that I haven't put anything here for almost a week, I've been taking a bit of a break to give my creative thoughts time to shape where I go from here, starting up again tomorrow.

I finished up the rough draft of Chapter Four today. The further I go, the more excited I get to really get into the true heart of this story. Things are starting to pick up momentum and I love it!

Rough Draft of Chapter Three Complete!

I'm pretty excited about the pace at which I'm writing. I really owe it to the outline, thank you to Terry Brooks for the idea and Shawn Speakman for swearing by it, it's really helped me. This is the shortest chapter yet and will probably be one of the book's shortest, it only took so long because it was the first time I've written in this character's point-of-view and it took some time to feel him out. Chapter four is already under way so I better get back to it!

I just finished up my first draft of chapter two! It's not as long as the first chapter nor is it as action-packed but it's a very good chapter for a bit of character development and good for introducing the reader to these characters.

Knocked off my rough draft of Chapter One although I will no doubt have to go back and revise and improve it at least several times. It's a really fast-paced action filled chapter so I was able to write it fairly quickly. The plan is to start on Chapter Two later today, and then when I have the enitire thing written, go back and read it several times, editing as I go to make it as strong as possible.

Outline Complete

Well, I just finished outlining the book a few minutes ago and I'm confident that this is a story that people will enjoy and will leave them wanting more. My next step is to just jump right in and start writing the thing, which I'll do tomorrow. The final outline says the book will have thirty-eight chapters, though this could be subject to change of course. I'll be sure to keep updating as I go!

My Book Project

As of right now, I'm in the beginning stages of a book project. I really like the story that I have, it has the potential to work as a stand alone book or as a springboard to an entire series. So where am I at now? I have realized that the reason I have never managed to see one of these projects through to completion is because I have been skipping a very important step at the beginning of the process: Outlining!

So I have begun outlining my story, chapter by chapter, hoping that having a nice frame to work within will prevent me from stalling and improve the quality of the story. If I know where I'm going from the beginning, it will limit the amount of things that I make up as I go and save myself a lot of work down the road. At this point, I have outlined twenty-two chapters and imagine that I will probably have about ten to twenty more. Once the outline is finished, I will jump right into writing the thing itself, and I'll be sure to keep you all posted on my progress as I go.

This is all there is to know about the story at this point:
- It has no title yet, and from what I hear, a book rarely keeps it's original title anyway.
- It falls into the adventure/fantasy genre, it involves a quest, danger, and self-discovery, all of the standard things you expect to find, along with a few twists of my own creation that make it unique.
- It will feature a fairly fast paced story with a good bit of action.

Well I should wrap this up and get back to the outlining so I can get this started, looking forward to posting here some more!

So basically I decided to start doing this as a way of driving myself a bit towards my career goals of being a writer. I figured if people are actually waiting to see what's going on next, that would help to motivate me through periods of writer's block and whatnot. So welcome and please keep me working!
